ACEC MD Recognizes Two KCI Projects
February 23, 2012
At their annual awards banquet, held on February 16 in Baltimore, the American Council of Engineering Companies / Maryland recognized two KCI projects with engineering excellence awards. The I-70 South Mountain Welcome Centers project was honored in the building/technology systems category and the MD 355 Interchange Design Build was recognized in the transportation category.
I-70 Welcome Centers – Working with contractor Kinsley Construction, engineers prepared design-build plans to reconstruct two aging welcome centers serving eastbound and westbound traffic. The new, environmentally-friendly buildings feature energy-efficient lighting, geothermal heating and cooling, and water saving devices, and meet the requirements of the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED-silver certification, the first Maryland State Highway Administration operational facility to do so.
MD Route 355 – KCI worked with contractor Concrete General to design and build a grade-separated interchange at the MD 355 intersection with the new Randolph/Montrose Parkway. The project required a 25-foot cut to lower the parkway, with significant effects to traffic, drainage and utilities. KCI staff turned this challenge into an opportunity by investigating all of the project elements and proposed improvements that could be redesigned to save time and materials. Innovative solutions enabled engineers to re-phase and relocate the MD 355 detour route along the interchange ramps, solving a complex problem while reducing construction costs.
KCI is an engineering, consulting and construction firm serving clients throughout the U.S. and beyond.
