KCI Helps Makeover Medfield Recreation Center
October 05, 2009
Sparks, MD
On September 26 and 29, more than 30 KCI employees helped clean, paint and renovate the gymnasium of the Medfield Heights Recreation Center in Baltimore, Md. As part of United Way’s Shareyourself Makeover Challenge, KCI joined five other local businesses and team members from the Baltimore Ravens to transform the aging, dilapidated center inside and out into a vibrant and engaging refuge where local boys and girls can play, create and learn.
With a budget of only $2,000, KCI employees took on the large gymnasium and stage area. The room was cleaned and completely painted including a mural of the Baltimore Ravens’ logo, signed by all the players on hand. Electrical repairs relit long dormant stage lights, which now shine on a freshly painted stage and new theater curtains. At the center’s request, volunteers also removed a damaged moveable-door track in the floor that posed a safety hazard during basketball games and other sporting events. New sporting equipment for the kids capped off the effort.
Following the renovation, Baltimore Mayor Sheila Dixon, City Councilwoman Mary Pat Clarke, and Medfield Community Association President Paul Smith toured the facility and spoke with each team about their experience and effort. Local children, who helped with the official ribbon-cutting ceremony, were then able to experience the new center first-hand. Their smiles and obvious excitement with the new center and the possibilities it holds for them was by-and-far the biggest reward for the volunteers.
