KCI served as the lead consultant for a group of seven bridge replacements in five counties. The contract was among the North Carolina Department of Transportation’s first express design-build projects. The firm managed a diverse team providing myriad engineering services including structures, SUE construction inspection, roadway design, traffic control, hydraulics, erosion control, permitting, geotechnical, and right-of-way acquisition.
We had a very competent group of employees working on this project who helped it progress smoothly through the design process into the construction phase.
Jared C. Medlin, PEPractice Leader
Each bridge posed a separate set of challenges, including aesthetics for the largest bridge, which crossed the Linville River and would be seen from a popular vacation and recreational destination.
KCI’s value engineering work saved the client more than $340,000 by offering alternative recommendations that changed one bridge to a culvert and eliminated a span on a second structure.
