Mattawoman Wastewater Treatment Plant

Client:Charles County Department of Public Works
Location:Charles County, Md.
Services:Environmental engineering

KCI provided planning, design and construction services for the expansion and upgrade of Mattawoman Wastewater Treatment Plant, the largest Maryland facility discharging effluent into the Potomac River. Through the application of unique design solutions such as effluent reuse, bio-solids recycling and multi-staged nitrogen removal, we helped the county meet current enhanced nutrient removal (ENR) requirements, accommodate planned local growth, and improve the health of the Chesapeake Bay. As a result, Mattawoman is now one of the most flexible, innovative and state-of-the-art wastewater treatment plants in Maryland and is capable of reducing nutrient discharges to the bay by nearly two million pounds per year.
