Patapsco Wastewater Treatment Plant ENR Upgrade

Client:Baltimore City Department of Public Works
Location:Baltimore, Md.
Services:Environmental engineering

As part of a joint venture, KCI designed upgrade improvements for enhanced nutrient removal (ENR) at a design capacity of 81 million gallons per day for the Patapsco Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP), a pure oxygen-activated sludge plant. We performed process evaluations, concept design development, and 35-percent-level design. Our services included a nitrification inhibition study of the industrial plant influent, an evaluation of alternative ENR technologies, and selection and design of a Biological Aerated Filter (BAF) process. The Patapsco plant is the most complex WWTP design configuration to attempt this technology in the U.S.
