14th Street Bridge Corridor EIS

Client:Federal Highway Administration, Eastern Federal Lands Highway Division
Location:Washington, D.C., and Arlington, Va.
Services:Transportation and environmental planning, traffic, structural and highway engineering, cultural resources

KCI prepared an EIS for mobility improvements along the 14th Street Bridge Corridor, among the mostly heavily congested corridors in region. The five-mile-long study area presented unique transportation challenges because of its location adjacent to the Pentagon and the capital’s monumental core. The primary objective of the EIS was to evaluate all reasonable alternatives for meeting the purpose and need: reducing congestion, enhancing safety, and improving traffic operations along the corridor. The planning team worked with numerous stakeholders to develop the document, which demonstrates the likelihood that mobility and safety can be enhanced in an urban corridor without massive capacity improvements. Instead, management strategies focus on more efficient operations.
