The Charles County Office of Development and Capital Services contracted with KCI to complete a feasibility study and later prepare engineering plans for the proposed Southern Maryland Minor League Baseball Stadium. The Blue Crabs are part of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball, an independent league.
The stadium project was unique in its scope of services and accelerated schedule. Our team evaluated two 40-acre sites that would need to accommodate a minor league baseball stadium and 2,000 parking spaces. The unusual use required a full range of analysis for each location including geotechnical studies to determine soil bearing capacity and traffic analysis to determine potential issues with site access and future road improvement requirements. Significant coordination was required between KCI, Charles County, representatives from the Maryland Stadium Authority, and the architect who had already completed 15-25 percent drawings for the stadium before KCI was awarded the contract for the study.
Due to on-going discussions and negotiations within the legislature involving state and local funding for the project, the study schedule required delivery of the report in less than six weeks. KCI was able to successfully complete the work in four weeks.
A preliminary construction cost estimate was developed to assist in site selection. While the cost estimate was preliminary, the client was able to effectively use the information to anticipate and compare how each location could affect overall cost, from design through construction and maintenance.
The field elevations had to be set to ensure proper drainage and minimize potential impacts to wetlands that run along the property.

The site recommended by KCI was eventually chosen, and the firm was contracted to provide engineering and design services. KCI provided site engineering and wastewater pumping station design for the new $22 million stadium. KCI completed the layout and design of all parking areas and necessary drive aisles. The site was graded and designed within MDE stormwater management guidelines. Potable water was brought to the stadium from the existing county lines along the adjacent roadway. The sanitary sewer was designed for the stadium including a new pump station. The pump station was designed to handle both the stadium and the proposed high school next to the property. KCI was also responsible for erosion and sediment control issues related to the stadium’s development.
The Blue Crabs’ stadium accommodates approximately 4,500 patrons with overflow seating available on grassy berms and parking availability for 2,000 vehicles.
