Starting as a minor lighting upgrade, the U.S. 50 project turned into a major reconstruction effort when the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) combined five separate task orders under an open-end contract into one sizable project. The KCI team prepared plans to upgrade existing roadway lighting at five separate intersections stretching from MD 424 to MD 70. Engineers initiated design for upgrading cables, control cabinets and electrical service for the lighting system while maintaining existing poles and luminaires.
Our challenge was to run the conduits and cables through the existing bridges using plans had been prepared in the 1990s and weren’t very detailed.
Aaron M. Hottenstein, PE, PTOETransportation Engineer
After final plans were submitted, MDOT SHA requested that the entire lighting system be replaced, including new poles with LED luminaires. Our team immediately accommodated these changing needs that involved atypical requirements such as local permit coordination, utility service issues and underpass mounting details. This high level of responsiveness led MDOT SHA to call out the design team for success on a very dynamic and complicated project.
