The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) Maryland Chapter honored the Exelon Baltimore Headquarters building with the Large Commercial Project award at the 2016 Wintergreen Awards ceremony last month. The annual event recognizes projects, businesses and people that exemplify a commitment to sustainability.
Located between Harbor East and Fells Point in Baltimore, the 350-foot-tall, mixed-use tower houses Exelon’s new Baltimore headquarters as well as apartments and retail space. Currently seeking LEED Gold certification, USGBC Maryland recognized the project’s sustainable design and green features. KCI provided the electrical engineering and survey services for the development and design of a 39 Kilowatt fixed-tilt photovoltaic system that was integrated on the building’s rooftop. Our team worked with the developer’s engineers, as well as Exelon and Constellation to determine the maximum array size and how to mount the modules to the penthouse roof. To ensure that the proper electrical coordination was performed, our team also worked with the electrical engineer of record to determine the correct location to tie the photovoltaic system into the building. The facility officially opened in November 2016 and is expected to receive its LEED certification in early 2017.
All of the winners were announced in a press release published by USGBC Maryland.
