Stoney Creek Watershed Wins Engineering Excellence Award

RALEIGH, N.C., January 23, 2008—KCI Technologies Inc., a multi-disciplined engineering firm with offices in the Northeast, Southeast and Mid-Atlantic, received an Honor Award for the Stoney Creek Local Watershed Plan from the North Carolina Chapter of the American Council of Engineering Companies as part of their 2008 Engineering Excellence Awards competition.

“Not only is this an honor for KCI, it is a great opportunity to recognize the North Carolina Ecosystem Enhancement Program’s (EEP) continuing watershed-based efforts to develop and achieve environmental goals throughout the state,” said KCI project manager Mike Schlegel.

KCI led the development of the first-ever Phase IV implementation of a local watershed plan for EEP. Based on research and a study prepared by KCI in Phases I, II and III of the local watershed plan for Stoney Creek—a watershed located in Wayne County around Goldsboro, NC—KCI developed a Phase IV project implementation model, which focused on targeted outreach as a means to achieve environmental mitigation goals. KCI prioritized potential projects, created a mutual understanding between EEP and local residents, assessed landowner interest and willingness to undertake projects, and encouraged local participation in project implementation.

“People are calling us now,” said Rob Breeding, EEP senior watershed planner. “I’m extremely happy with the outcome. We have an indelible presence in the watershed now. People are going to remember us.”
