Sailwinds

Arching gracefully near the shores of the Choptank River in Cambridge, MD, a 110-foot sail attracts the attention of boaters and motorists along U.S. 50. The structure is the capstone of a unique visitors center and educational facility, funded by the Maryland State Highway Administration.

Sailwinds Park serves as a gateway to Dorchester County on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. Since it opened in May 1999, the Visitors Center has drawn more than 70,500 travelers. KCI provided civil, structural, environmental, and site engineering design services for the popular facility.

“Sailwinds met its share of challenges during its young life,” said KCI’s Project Manager Stephen F. Drumm, PE, following christening ceremonies on October 30, 2001. “The building survived a fire in September 1999 and high winds in May 2000 that toppled the sail canopy during construction. But, it’s a truly remarkable and beautiful facility that reflects the State’s desire to set innovative standards in transportation planning and economic development.”
