Office Updates (Fall 1998)

Maryland

Laurel—Former U.S. Senator J. Glenn Beall, Jr., recognized KCI’s outstanding survey and design work on the Wills Creek Esplanade in Cumberland, MD, during opening ceremonies on May 15. Terry F. Neimeyer, PE, and Brian E. Sullivan represented KCI during the event.

Hunt Valley —KCI will be providing design services for interchange approaches on both shores of the $1.6 billion Woodrow Wilson Bridge Replacement project. In mid-March, VDOT awarded the HNTB/KCI Team a contract to provide environmental and highway/bridge design services for the I-95/U.S. Route 1 Approach Interchange. And in late April, the Maryland State Highway Administration selected KCI from among five competing teams to provide design services for the I-95/I-495 & MD 210 Approach Interchange.

Virginia

Christiansburg —William R. Fore, Jr., is managing two U.S. Route 58 contracts for VDOT, inspecting construction of the $17.5 million dualization of the highway through Patrick & Henry counties, and the $18.5 million construction of parallel lanes, two bridges, and a drainage facility in Patrick County.

Pennsylvania

Harrisburg—In March, KCI submitted a Draft Environmental Impact Statement for the PA Route 119 Improvement Project to PennDOT, District 10. The document, edited to a concise 150 pages and available on CD Rom, may be the first of comparable scope to be completed in less than one year. KCI’s approach to the project will be highlighted in the Winter 1998 Innovator

North Carolina

Raleigh—In September, the North Carolina Department of the Environment & Natural Resources, Wetlands Restoration Program awarded KCI and KCI Environmental Technologies & Construction, Inc., a $300,000 open-end contract to provide comprehensive design-build wetlands and stream restoration services throughout the state. Joseph J. Pfeiffer, Jr., PWS, will manage the task orders, which are expected to get under way soon.

Delaware

DelDOT Secretary Anne P. Canby and local dignitaries officially reopened the Van Buren Street Bridge in Wilmington on August 17. KCI President Terry F. Neimeyer, Structures Division Chief Stephen Carl, and Project Engineer Monica McCluskey attended the ribbon cutting ceremony, which culminated the two-year rehabilitation of the elegant historic structure. State Senator Harris B. McDowell, congratulated KCI’s design team, led by Douglas W. Andrew, PE, for “really listening to the needs of the community… and designing a modern bridge that reflects the historic and aesthetic values of the community.”
