Professional Notes (Fall 1998)

The Maryland Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) honored Jill M. Spiess, PE, as the Young Engineer of the Year on May 13. In presenting the award, KCI president Terry F. Neimeyer, PE, recognized Jill for her leadership and outstanding contributions to her clients, KCI, and the community. (Pictured: Terry; Jill; Anthony M. On June 24, Ernst & Young recognized Chairman & CEO Jack Kinstlinger, PE, as one of 26 finalists in Maryland’s 1998 Entrepreneur of the Year program. The national competition—sponsored by Nasdaq, The Baltimore Sun, First Union, and Sprint—drew more than 70 regional nominees. It honors individuals “whose ingenuity, hard work, and perseverance have created and sustained successful, growing business ventures.” In May, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute honored Jack with the 1998 Alumni Association Fellow Award, recognizing individuals, who by their life’s work, have set examples for Rensselaer graduates.

At the annual meeting of the Consulting Engineers Council (CEC) of Maryland on June 18, Terry F. Neimeyer, PE, was installed as Secretary for 1998-99 and is serving on the Executive Committee. James W. Blake, PE, was appointed to the Transportation Committee of the North Carolina CEC for 1998-99.

In January, Parker F. Williams, administrator of the Maryland State Highway Administration, named KCI’s Lester L. Guillard, Jr., 1997 Consultant Inspector of the Year. Larry was selected from a field of more than 250 inspectors. Mr. Williams also honored KCI at the 1997 Maryland With Pride Awards Banquet, presented at the National Quality Initiative Conference. Brian A. Bernstein accepted the Award of Excellence in the Landscape Architectural Design, Consultant category for KCI’s design of the Slaughterhouse Branch Stream Restoration Project.

Douglas W. Andrew, PE, and Jill M. Spiess, PE, organized the 1998 MDE Stormwater Design Manual Course, conducted on May 8 in Towson, MD. The course was presented by the Baltimore County Department of Environmental Protection and Resource Management and MD ASCE. KCI’s Steven M. Hurt served as one of four featured speakers.

The North Carolina Chapter of the Society of Ecological Restoration has named Julie Fontaine to its 1998 Board of Directors.
