North Carolina
Raleigh—In August, KCI began providing environmental services in support of highway projects for the North Carolina Department of Transportation’s Office of Natural Environment, under a $650,000 supplemental agreement to a two-year, open-end $350,000 contract. Robert N. Bailey and Gary M. Mryncza will manage the contract, involving stream and wetland restoration projects, under the direction of Principal-in-Charge Joseph J. Pfeiffer.
Pennsylvania
Philadelphia—Under a contract with the City of Philadelphia Dept. of Streets, KCI is beginning final design for reconstructing a half-mile of Bell’s Mill Road, whose original alignment dates to 1733. Joseph P. Serbu, PE, is managing the project, and construction is scheduled for 2005.
Maryland
Hunt Valley—KCI began work in August under a two-year, $1.7 million contract with the Baltimore City Office of Transportation to inspect more than 300 bridges in the City of Baltimore. Project Manager Michael K. Rice, PE, will oversee the work of inspectors from KCI and three subconsultants and manage the complex logistics of inspecting the structures, many of which traverse CSX rail lines, electrified Amtrak and Light Rail Tracks, and busy highways.
Virginia
Richmond—In recent months, the Virginia Department of General Services (VDGS) awarded KCI two construction engineering and inspection contracts in the Richmond area. Under the direction of Project Manager Dean E. Thompson, KCI will oversee a $25 million renovation of the Old Library of Virginia, located on the Capital Square. The facility will be renovated to provide new office and administrative space for the Governor of Virginia, the Virginia Legislature, and cabinet secretaries. Part of a series of construction projects in the capital complex, the renovation is scheduled for completion in March 2005.
Thompson also will oversee inspection services for a $16 million project involving the demolition of existing state-owned structures and the construction of a new, multilevel parking facility, adjacent to the capital complex. VDGS plans to recycle 90% of the demolished material—an innovative approach well received by the community and the Governor. The six-month demolition phase began in August, with construction scheduled for completion in December 2005. Bernie Pere will serve as KCI’s full-time inspector.
