President's Message (Summer 2003)

Friends:

In April 2003, KCI realized a significant milestone, when the Engineering News Record (ENR) magazine ranked KCI 94th on its list of the Top 500 Design Firms in the Country, based on revenues of $81.9 million in 2002. Breaking into ENR’s top 100—one of KCI’s strategic goals set in 1999—is a testament to the dedicated efforts of the company’s employee-owners and to the confidence our clients and friends place in us year after year.

On the heels of the ENR survey, Zweig White confirmed what our employees have known all along: KCI is HOT! The national management advisor ranked KCI 37th on its list of the top 100 hottest firms in the industry, based on gross revenue growth between 1999 and 2002. In the next few weeks, KCI also will be recognized by CE News magazine as one of the Best Civil Engineering Firms to Work For in the nation for the second straight year. Great news for KCI, especially in this somewhat uncertain economic climate.
Though rankings and awards are indicators of past success, KCI is positioning itself to anticipate the long-range needs of clients and employees. In Florida, for instance, we have expanded the company’s construction engineering and inspection operations into the Tampa area, where our talented engineers and inspectors are delivering great services on high-visibility, local projects (see the cover story).

In the mid-Atlantic region, the Maryland State Highway Administration recently slated KCI to perform environmental, surveying, and subsurface utility engineering services for the Inner County Connector (ICC) highway project in Montgomery and Prince George’s Counties. The ICC is one of the largest public works projects under way in Maryland and has generated considerable political discussion in recent years.

Internally, KCI is nearing completion of the company’s largest administrative project in its history, replacing the firm’s computer software system with an Oracle-based system. The implementation has been managed by some KCI employees who most of our clients never get to meet, but who oversee the systems that allow projects to be completed on time and within budget. Our administrative staff has devoted countless hours to delivering this demanding and important project. When things are working well at a technical services company, it’s important for everyone to thank the administrative partners within the firm; here, they’re the ones who help make KCI a great place in which to work.

As Summer draws to a close, we thank you for your business and loyalty and look forward to continuing our mutually beneficial working relationship in the future. Perhaps by 2008, you will see KCI among ENR’s Top 50.
