President's Message (Summer 2004)

Friends:

As heavy rains in the mid-Atlantic have given way to warmer weather, we are happy that a mild Winter of 2003-04 proved friendly to our business operations. KCI’s core transportation, environmental, site/facilities, and construction management markets remain strong and growing. In March, we posted a six percent increase in the appraised fair market
value of KCI stock—the ninth such increase in as many years. Since KCI became employee-owned in 1988, the firm’s stock has increased 618%, which is a reflection of our employees’ great work ethic, our focus on excellence, and our successful partnerships with clients and colleagues.

To help ensure our ability to deliver quality services in the future, KCI is pursuing ISO 9000 certification in our Northeast Region as well as formulating a Business Continuity Plan and implementing protocols to deal with unexpected contingencies at our headquarters in Hunt Valley, MD. In the event of an emergency, such as damage to or loss of our facilities or the corporate computer or phone networks, our employees would know where to report for work and how to restore project files. Uninterrupted service to clients is KCI’s top priority, and this plan will help us help you deliver completed projects on schedule.

This issue’s cover story is a great example of how KCI was able to help the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) respond on a moment’s notice to a catastrophic tanker truck fire on I-75 earlier this year. KCI arrived on scene within hours, providing 24-hour inspection services to get a badly damaged bridge on a major interstate reopened in a record-pace eleven days.

Looking ahead on the national transportation front, we’re following closely the Federal debate on transportation funding. A well-funded, six-year bill would allow State DOTs to continue necessary highway and transit programs to relieve congestion. In anticipation of a new bill, KCI’s strategic plan provides for growth in our transportation market. With new offices in Georgia and Ohio, we recently have won several DOT projects, expanding KCI’s presence in the Southern and mid-Western United States.
