Office Updates (Summer 2000)

North Carolina

Raleigh—KCI is beginning work at North Carolina State University under a one-year, open-end contract to provide general civil engineering design services. Michelle R. Brame, PE, is managing the project and James W. Blake, PE, is serving as principal.

KCI’s Raleigh Office is providing a specialized service to help clients pinpoint the horizontal and vertical location of underground utilities. Using Subsurface Utility Exploration (SUE) technologies, KCI project teams are incorporating precise utility location data—even in unmapped areas—early in the design process, enabling engineers and drafters to prepare plans that reflect actual site conditions.

Pennsylvania

Harrisburg—The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), District 10 has selected KCI to conduct preliminary engineering and environmental studies for the 11-mile SR 0228 highway expansion project. Located 15 miles north of Pittsburgh in Butler County, the two-lane roadway will be upgraded to a multi-lane facility to accommodate residential and commercial growth. Scott Sternberger is managing the project, known locally as “Criders Corners East.”

Pittsburgh—Since September 1999, KCI has been managing and inspecting the reconstruction of nine miles of the Pennsylvania Turnpike, from milepost 76 to 85, in Westmoreland County near New Stanton. Working with the contractor, KCI project manager James C. Lockhart, PE, has implemented creative solutions to keep the $50 million construction project on schedule, despite heavy rains that have caused the temporary roadway to fail. Jim expects to complete Stage 2 by September. The overall project is scheduled for completion in August 2002.

Maryland

Laurel—Building on KCI’s reputation as a leader in telecommunications engineering, the Laurel Office began work in May on civil and site engineering plans for as many as 150 cellular sites under a contract with Voice Stream Wireless. The two-year project involves location studies as well as civil, structural, and electrical design. Marianne Kiernan, PE, is serving as project manager.

Hunt Valley—KCI is working with contractor Dewey Jordan, Inc., on a fast-track, design-build project for relocating one-half mile of MD 914 in Frederick County, MD. Scheduled for completion in October 2000, the project is part of the overall I-70/I-270 interchange reconstruction. KCI is providing designs for two temporary ramp connections to westbound I-70, as well as plans for the roadway design, lighting, signage, signalization, stormwater management, and maintenance of traffic.
