5/24/01—FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Hunt Valley, MD—The ESOP Association—a national organization of companies with employee stock ownership plans (ESOPs)—has awarded KCI Technologies, Inc., its 2001 Annual Award for Communications Excellence in the category of Printed Materials (firms with more than 250 employees). KCI is a Hunt Valley, Maryland-based engineering firm with 23 offices located throughout the East Coast. KCI’s Corporate Communications Director Laura D. Johnston and Assistant Communications Director Bonnie C. Lembitz accepted the award during the ESOP Association’s 24th Annual Conference, held on May 10th at the J. W. Marriott Hotel in Washington, D.C. The ESOP Association sponsors the AACE competition to foster communication within employee-owned firms and among ESOP member companies.

This is the second year in a row that KCI has won top honors, earning recognition last year in the category of Overall Communications Program (firms with more than 500 employees).

In accepting the award, Johnston commented on the importance of promoting employee ownership and the contributions of employee-owners. “We think ESOPs attract good people, but ESOPs also create a culture in which good people are free to become great people—both on the job and in the community. KCI is full of great people who are not only good at what they do, but are heroes in their communities.”

Johnston earned a bachelor of science degree from the University of Colorado in 1983. Lembitz graduated from the University of Baltimore with a bachelor of science in 1998.

FIRM OVERVIEW—With revenues of $65.6 million in 2000, KCI is ranked 111th among the top 500 engineering firms in the country by the Engineering News Record. The employee-owned, multi-discipline engineering firm employs more than 730 people operating in 23 offices in eight States—Delaware, Florida, Maryland, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia—as well as the District of Columbia.
