KCI Launches CM at-Risk Subsidiary, KCI Construction Services, LLC

6/02/03—FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

HUNT VALLEY, MD—On Tuesday, May 27, the Board of Directors of KCI Holdings, Inc., approved the launch of a new, wholly-owned subsidiary that will provide CM at-risk, design-build, and other alternative project delivery services. The new company, KCI Construction Services, LLC (KCI-CS)—which is headquartered in Hunt Valley, MD, with sister company KCI Technologies, Inc.—is led by KCI Senior Vice President Christopher J. Griffith, PE, and Operations Manager Jerry R. Myers.

In recent months, the engineering firm KCI Technologies has been laying the foundation for the new company, which has already completed one project, and is negotiating work for three more. “In the past, KCI Technologies has built a great reputation for providing construction management and inspection services to local, State and Federal agencies,” notes Griffith. “Now, with the addition of KCI-CS, we’ll be able to deliver preconstruction- and construction-phase services to owners in all market sectors, as part of an overall strategy for minimizing surprises in the field, reducing overhead costs, and expediting project completion.”

Myers views construction as much more than a commodity achieved through the low-bid process. “When you have projects where the owner, estimator, contractor, and designers are all on the same team, focussed on meeting the owner’s expectations regarding budget, scheduling, and quality, you can’t help but have a successful project.”

Myers also notes that KCI-CS offers tremendous growth opportunities for KCI Technologies. “When you combine CM at risk with the expertise of site developers and mechanical, electrical, and structural engineers working within one family of companies, you can deliver complete, turnkey projects to clients—and that sets us apart from the competition.”

Myers, who brings to KCI-CS more than 25 years of experience in pre- and post-construction services, works hand-in-hand with clients, providing all phases of project management services for commercial, retail, governmental, institutional, healthcare, educational, and athletic facilities. He is teaming with John G. Zera, Jr., who is regarded as one of the best chief estimators in the business. During the last 19 years, Zera has prepared detailed project cost estimates, developed schedules, and negotiated subcontractor contracts, providing a solid foundation to clients requiring tight budgetary controls, which, in turn, has helped to ensure successful projects for the entire team.
