FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
HUNT VALLEY, MD, May 31, 2007—The National Capital Chapter of the Construction Management Association of America (CMAA) honored the Phase II Renovations Project at the Delaware Recycling Center with a 2006 Project Achievement Award, among projects valued under $10 million. At the April 25 awards banquet, representatives from the Delaware Solid Waste Authority (DSWA) and Hunt Valley-based consulting engineering firm KCI Technologies, Inc. accepted the construction management award.
The Phase II Renovations project at the Delaware Recycling Center in New Castle involved demolition of a waste-to-energy power generation building, turbine building and the existing electrical distribution system; construction of a new electrical distribution system; and insulation of an existing 264,000-gallon water tank. The active recycling center remained open throughout construction.
To set an example as a proactive recycling center, DSWA offered a bonus if the contractors recycled at least 85% of the demolished materials. To monitor the recycling effort, KCI Project Manager Larry Holste tracked the weight of all materials removed from the demolition areas. He also helped the contractors identify recycling opportunities including reuse of materials on-site.
Holste dealt with several unexpected issues that could have snowballed into delays, costly change orders and claims for the owner. His diligent oversight and on-site management of the problems minimized DSWA’s risk, saving them time and money.
The project was successfully completed with no Requests for Information, no claims and no accidents. By being proactive in change order negotiations, Holste saved DSWA over $320,000. This savings exceeded KCI’s total fee, highlighting the effectiveness and value of the construction management services provided.
