2000-01 Corporate Charity: Baltimore Reads
Baltimore Reads Book Collection—KCI adopted as its corporate charity for 2000-01. On August 26, KCI’s Deborah Brown, Laura Johnston, Amy Lambert, Mike Lambert, Bonnie Lembitz, Sylvia Thies, and Debbie Woollen collected children’s books at the gates of Oriole Park at Camden Yards before an evening ball game. The new and gently used books will be distributed among Baltimore elementary schools with low library reserves via the Baltimore Reads Book Bank.

Indoor Putt-Putt Scores for NMSS—In March 2000, staff rallied for one final event to raise money for the (NMSS). Organized by KCI’s 1999-2000 MS Charity Committee, an indoor putt-putt course took shape in the firm’s Hunt Valley headquarters. Each division designed a golf hole reflective of the type of work completed within the division, and employees spent a lunch hour playing the 10-hole course for a $5 donation to NMSS.
Top design honors went to the Administrative Group with the themed hole, “Don’t Burn Your Bridges As You Climb The Corporate Ladder.” Other creative concepts included: the Transportation Division’s “Woodrow Wilson Bridge” hole which incorporated signage, curves, and speed and load limits; Cultural Resources/Environmental Planning’s joint historic structures and native plantings hole; Mechanical/Electrical Engineering’s motorized railroad car hole; Construction Management Group’s “Hardhat Required” course; Surveys/Site Development’s trek through “Surveying in the City;” Purchasing’s “Flush Out MS” hole; Finance’s “Bean Counter” hole; a Structures hole; and Information Technology’s challenging CD-rom par five.
The event raised over $400 for NMSS and gave KCI employees the opportunity to showcase their knowledge, creativity, and innovation.
Holiday Collection for Our Daily Bread & Bea Gaddy’s Family Centers—During the holidays, we count our many blessings of family, friends, food, and shelter. We give thanks for all that we have and remember the less fortunate. This season, KCI’s Pat Fisher, Erni Heiser, Amy Lambert, and Bridget Mainley organized a collection of clothing and non-perishable food items for Bea Gaddy’s Family Centers and Our Daily Bread Soup Kitchen. Employees donated generously to extend their blessings to Baltimore’s homeless.
School Visitation Task Force—This Spring, the Public Relations Committee of the Consulting Engineers Council of Maryland initiated a school visitation program to enlighten children in area middle schools about the impact of engineering in their community. The program’s goal is to encourage young people to think about careers in engineering and to pursue a course of study that will help them attain jobs in the profession.
The school visitation task force kicked off the initiative with visits to Roland Park Elementary and Middle Schools on May 31 and Hereford Middle School on June 1. KCI’s Amy Cole, Chris Heyn, Laura Johnston, Tobi Kester, Bonnie Lembitz, and Jacqueline Schrenker-Case joined engineers, scientists, landscape architects, and surveyors from other area firms to provide an educational and entertaining view of how “What We Do is All Around You.” On December 8, KCI’s Marty Amig, Chris Griffith, Chris Heyn, Tobi Kester, and Ken Saunders joined engineers, scientists, construction managers, and planners from other area firms at Dulaney High School in Baltimore County, MD.
Maglev Challenge 2000—On May 6th, KCI’s Amy Cole, Chris Heyn, and Laura Johnston served as judges in the 2000 Maglev Challenge. Several teams from area middle schools participated in the annual event held at the Baltimore Museum of Industry.
