Abingdon Maintenance Facility

Client: Harford County Department of Public Works

Location: Abingdon, Maryland

Services: Mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, site/civil engineering, environmental engineering, landscape architecture, surveys, construction administration

KCI provided engineering, landscape architecture, surveying, and construction administration services for the construction of a new 7,450 SF one-story office building with an attached 8,320 SF garage, recycling area, a flat yard, asphalt parking areas, and stormwater management pond for the Harford County Water and Sewer Maintenance Shop and renovation of the existing building for the Highway Division. The total site area was approximately 37.5 acres, 14 acres which are currently being occupied by the Harford County Department of Public Works. The site proposed numerous site/civil challenges including the existence of wetlands and an existing underground county landfill. Although the site appeared to be adequate, several limits were placed on the actual design, including the fact that the site could not be graded due to the proximity and depth of the existing capped landfill. In addition, the required setbacks from the existing wetlands and the required area needed for the proposed development made it difficult to grade in the proposed stormwater management facility.

Mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection services were provided for the new water and sewer building with exterior wash bay and the renovation of the existing highways building. Mechanical services included the complete renovation of the existing systems, HVAC renovation, installation of rooftop air handling units, and ventilation of service bays. Electrical services included the installation of complete electrical distribution systems, improvements to existing wiring, emergency power design, energy efficient lighting, design of the fire alarm system, design of the telecommunication system, and security systems. Plumbing services included new domestic and sanitary piping and fixtures, hot water distribution, and drainage systems. Fire protection services included the installation of automatic fire sprinklers, dry pipe systems, and systems for areas classified as hazard groups one, two, and light hazard.
