Anne Arundel County Public Schools intended to provide a middle school in the Brooklyn Park Area. The Board owned a vacant 199,000 SF building originally constructed in 1954, with additions in 1956 and 1981. This facility formerly housed the Brooklyn Park Junior/Senior High School and Brooklyn Park/Lindale Middle School.
The project team undertook a feasibility study to determine if the existing building would support a middle school. The feasibility study involved schematic design for a broad range of options relating to the provision of a physical plant optimizing both the delivery of a contemporary instructional program and the facility cost. Project elements included: site and safety analysis, program requirements, accessibility and code issues, wetlands, base and aerial topography, grading, drainage, sediment/erosion control, layouts and easements, parking and roadways, stormwater management, landscaping, and water and sewer service.
Following the feasibility study, the team prepared final design plans for the $25,000,000 one-of-a-kind mixed-use facility, housing the Brooklyn Park Middle School with 900 students and community service functions including the Chesapeake Center for the Creative arts. All designs were prepared in accordance with ADA standards.
