KCI Technologies, Inc. provided site planning, site/civil engineering, landscape architecture, and traffic engineering services for the demolition and construction of new sidewalk, traffic calming devices, bike area, and other improvements to the streetscape of Carroll Avenue within the City of Takoma Park.
This project involved a fast tracked design schedule and innovative design approach that included a series of public workshops and intense design charrettes with the local community, City Staff, and various review agencies such as the Maryland National Park and Planning Commission, the State Highway Administration, the Maryland Historic Trust, the Montgomery County Government, and the Local Historic Preservation Committee. The success of the project was contingent upon a well-executed public involvement program.
KCI’s design approach to the revitalization and redevelopment of this project area started with the identification of image-building elements that form the community’s sense of place. A visual reconnaissance was completed and community members provided local context for the project. Existing landmarks, historic structures and unique landscape features provided the framework for the final design development for recreational, and urban design enhancements. Proposed design elements articulated the unique character and image of the neighborhood. The comprehensive community input ensured consensus during the design and throughout construction.
