MD Route 5 at Coventry Way Interchange

Client: Maryland State Highway Administration (MSHA)

Location: Maryland

Services: Transportation engineering

Maryland Route 5 at Coventry Way, one of Maryland’s first urban diamond interchanges, is the product of a successful partnership in value engineering (VE) between KCI and the Maryland State Highway Administration (MSHA). KCI worked with the MSHA Design Team to implement VE concepts, which reduced the roadway typical section; revised profile grades; minimized impacts to utilities; and created maintenance of traffic (MOT) plans that limited the need for additional right-of-way, saving the State more than $8 million in project costs.

High traffic volumes of 77,000 vehicles daily—projected to grow to 130,000 vehicles—required a coordinated MOT plan that allowed traffic to pass on the diamond access ramps during the bridge’s construction. KCI delivered a full range of services on the two-mile design project, providing highway, traffic, structural, geotechnical, wetlands, drainage, stormwater management, and erosion & sediment control designs. In addition, the project team developed complex, multi-phased construction plans to identify potential problems early, enabling construction to be completed ahead of schedule.
