KCI’s team of landscape architects, planners, and engineers provided the City of Hagerstown with master planning and design services for the rehabilitation of the historic Hagerstown Fairgrounds. This 73-acre park includes three softball and soccer fields, an inline skate park, BMX bicycle course, pedestrian and bicycle paths, and an outdoor concert shell.

Due to the historic nature of the property, care was taken to ensure that the existing grandstand and gatehouse were included in the planning. KCI’s held several public meetings to gain consensus from community stakeholders on the use of the park.

Of major concern to the community were the aesthetics of the park, multi-use functionality, and traffic impact on the surrounding community. Through the design of the park, KCI was able to create features such as the pedestrian and bicycle trail. The trail also serves as an interpretive nature walk featuring informational postings regarding the native plantings in the stormwater management pond the trail encompasses. KCI also incorporated a traffic roundabout into the design which provided traffic calming and a secondary access point to the park easing the traffic concerns and incorporated landscaping to increase the aesthetic value.
