Hominy Swamp Creek Watershed Study and Stream Restoration

Client: North Carolina Wetlands Restoration Program

Location: Wilson County, North Carolina

Services: Environmental planning and design

KCI was contracted to develop a watershed management plan for the Hominy Swamp Creek watershed, a 5.4 square mile sub-watershed in the Neuse River Basin. Goals and objectives for the restoration of the watershed focused upon improving water quality and overall system functions.

Watershed level BMP’s include preservation of wetlands/riparian buffers, storm water/water quality management, and community education. Sub-watershed BMP’s include outfall stabilization, head cut stabilization, acquisition of expanded riparian/wetland buffer, development of water quality BMP’s for point source discharges and bank stabilization/stream restoration.

In Phase II of the Project, KCI was assigned the design/build implementation of 2,200 linear feet of stream channel restoration. The project included performing a feasibility study, Rosgen Level III evaluation of the proposed stream restoration project site and a selected reference system, developing design criteria and plans, preparing cost estimates and implementation of the project.
