Inland Bays Regional Wastewater Facility

Client: Sussex County, Delaware

Location: Sussex County, Delaware

Services: Global positioning system surveys

Sussex County, Delaware selected KCI Technologies and subconsultant Metcalf & Eddy, to design a new regional wastewater treatment facility and associated collection and conveyance system for Long Neck Peninsula. The system was needed to serve 5,000 homes in an 18-community resort area along the environmentally sensitive Rehoboth and Indian River Bays. The project team provided the county with complete engineering support during development, planning, permitting, design, and construction.

KCI’s innovative consulting services included:

By using its GPS resources, KCI provided Sussex County with highly accurate and cost-effective surveying information. Because the Long Neck Sanitary Sewer District is an expansive area, with several locations accessible only by boat, performing control surveys using traditional line-of-site field methods would have been difficult and costly. KCI’s GPS surveys, which are accurate to within several millimeters both horizontally and vertically, saved the County significant costs.

The Inland Bays Regional Wastewater Facility is designed to process a peak summer flow of 3.65 million gallons per day (mgd) and an average summer flow of 1.46 mgd. The facility began serving Long Neck residents in April 1992.
