In the heart of Baltimore City, construction is under way to modernize and expand the University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS) campus.
Since mid-1995, KCI’s construction managers, project engineers and inspectors, based in offices on the campus, have served as working partners with the UMMS project staff.
Under the direction of KCI Project Manager Bruce T. Hallgarth, KCI staff have supervised the construction of more than 30 projects, ranging in scale from a $200,000 master plan for elevator improvements to a new $10 million, 45,000 square-foot office and communications building named the Maryland Institute of Emergency Medical Services System (MIEMSS).
Throughout the fast-paced renovation program, the KCI team has met with user groups to determine operational needs and identify ways to minimize impacts to staff and services during construction.
KCI’s on-site project engineers have developed cost estimates and schedules for proposed construction, assisted with the bidding process and ensured that contractors have delivered quality work on time and within budget.
In addition to the new office building, renovations during the initial two construction phase have included a $1.1 million Transitional Care Unit which provides skilled nursing for patients who no longer require full-time hospital care; a $4.6 million reconfiguration of space and infrastructure improvements to surgical suites at Kernan Hospital; and an $850,000 relocation and 4,300 square-foot expansion of the Admission Testing Center located in the North Hospital.
