Client: Anne Arundel County Department of Public Works

Location: Anne Arundel County, Maryland

Services: Geotechnical Engineering

KCI provided inspection and study oversight for this 400-foot long, 24-foot high earthen embankment dam. The purpose of the study was to explore subsurface conditions and conduct a geotechnical assessment of the dam’s suitability. The study was prompted by evidence of water seepage from the slopes of the 25-year old dam after a routine inspection. The dam is classified as high hazard by the Maryland Department of the Environment. A geophysical and test boring investigation was performed to evaluate the embankment conditions.

KCI recommended that seepage water from within the embankment be captured and controlled. Constructing a filter diaphragm, drainage blanket, impervious liner, and toe drains were recommended to halt flow through the dam. Since slope stability may become an issue during rapid pool drawdown or if excessive seepage exits the slope face, engineers recommended flatter slopes or strengthening the dam. KCI also recommended armoring the slopes or modifying the spillways to deal with potential overtopping of the dam during large storm events.
