GSA selected KCI to provide architectural/engineering design services for a $15 million renovation of the Social Security Administration Operations Building in Woodlawn, Maryland. Constructed in 1960, the four-story facility has 73,500 square meters of occupiable space and houses 6,721 employees. Because the building was occupied during the restoration, KCI provided a detailed and comprehensive plan for phasing the construction effort to accommodate the facility’s operational requirements. The project team was responsible for designing mechanical and electrical system upgrades to satisfy fire and safety codes as well as for improving facilities and services to meet the accessibility requirements of handicapped individuals.
