Takoma Park Fire Station

Client: Montgomery County Department of Public Works

Location: Takoma Park, Maryland

Services: Civil/Site Engineering, Site Planning, Landscape Architecture, Geotechnical Engineering, Surveying

KCI Technologies, Inc. provided site planning, site/civil engineering, landscape architecture, surveying, geotechnical engineering and construction administration services for the demolition of the existing facility, and the construction of a new 16,000 SF three-bay, one-story fire station on a 1+ acre site. The development included an elevated parking structure to accommodate volunteer fire department personnel. This project included a phased construction and the design of a temporary facility to house the existing equipment and staff during the construction of the new fire station. The project involved the purchase and development of adjacent property, extensive coordination with the Historic Preservation Commission of Montgomery County since the project resides within the Takoma Park Historic District.

KCI’s Site & Facilities Group coordinated with the design team during the planning phase to develop a preliminary site plan to be forwarded to the Owner for review and approval. KCI prepared the required documentation for the Mandatory Referral process through the Maryland National Capital Park and Planning Commission. These documents included preparation of a natural resources inventory/forest stand delineation, stormwater concept plan, zoning sketches, Preliminary Plan, and site tabulations for parking, impervious area, lighting, etc.

The design of the new site incorporated pull through apparatus access and a terraced parking structure for staff and visitor parking. KCI also assisted the Design Team with the development of a site/utility plan for the temporary station, which housed the existing equipment and staff on an adjacent site while the construction of the new site occurred.
