USACE Savannah Architectural/Engineering Services Contracts

Location: Air Force Base, N.C.

Client: U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah District

Services: Civil, structural, and environmental engineering

KCI provided civil, structural, and environmental design services to the base civil engineering unit at an Air Force Base. All work on these contracts was completed in AutoCADD format, using MASTER-SPEC for project specifications. Tasks included:

Airfield Paving Investigation. Working on military active flight line, in constant radio contact with the control tower, KCI’s inspectors and engineers made their evaluations of the existing concrete paving and paving joints. KCI assessed the overall condition and determined which paving sections would be removed. Funding limits were considered in the concept plans for removal and replacement. With a concept plan in place, KCI proceeded with detailed topographic surveys and a geotechnical evaluation of the subgrade. Concrete cores were also recovered for additional study.

KCI was able to determine through extensive evaluation and research that the severe cracking of the existing pavement was the result of chemical incompatibilities between the cement and coarse aggregate components of the concrete. This investigation expanded to involve the North Carolina Department of Transportation when it appeared that aggregate from the local quarries was the likely source of this cracking as well as similar conditions on many of the state’s roadways in that region. As a result of the study, KCI was able to customize the base concrete specifications to prevent this cracking from re-occurring.

KCI’s civil engineers produced construction plans to accomplish the pavement replacement and repairs using military standards, SPECSINTACT and CES cost estimating. Construction plans were developed considering on-going air traffic activities that could not be suspended or interrupted. KCI’s project team received a Letter of Commendation from the Base Engineer for their effort.

Building 2155, New Shop Facility and Parking. Under this task order, KCI provided a topographical survey and prepared base sheets. Under difficult time constraints, the project team completed all of the necessary field work, provided the site design, and completed the site plan. KCI’s structural engineers designed the foundation system and base slab for a pre-engineered building. KCI coordinated with the geotechnical engineers and the metal building manufacturer and prepared the relevant specifications. Structural plans included provisions for containment of hazardous materials.
