Services: Conduit Design
KCI has provided on-call engineering services to Verizon (Bell Atlantic) since 1977 under a series of continuous renewals of our Open-End contracts. Verizon has utilized our services for conduit design for their facilities in Maryland, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Virginia, Washington, D.C. and West Virginia.
KCI’s conduit design services include conduit plans and profiles, building entrenches, huts, manholes, remote terminal cabinets, interface cabinets, controlled vaults, safety monitoring and state/country road conduit relocations.
Our copper and fiber design services include underground, buried and aerial telephone engineering, as well as, copper, fiber and coaxial cable design. KCI has extensive experience and knowledge of Litespan 2000, SLC96 and Series 5 multi-plexers and Next Generation Digital Loop Carrier Systems.
KCI designs various conduit systems in MicroStation or “board-drafted”. The design criterion varies from re-locations due to road widening and new construction to remote fiber and/or copper fed terminals. Our efforts cover formations from 16-duct to 1-duct and from PVC to SDR.
We also are utilized our in-house survey team on various task assignments. They are able to transmit survey data electronically to our designers.
Sample task assignment include:
Verizon Conduit Internet GIS—Verizon owns and maintains thousands of manholes and an extensive network of conduit. Verizon selected KCI Technologies to design an application to store manhole and conduit information and to make that information available to it’s staff. In addition to application design, KCI was also tasked with the inspection of a portion of the thousands of manholes owned by Verizon.
Legacy duct and conduit data and newly acquired field data was entered and stored in a relational database, allowing reports to be generated and search queries to be executed. One of main features of the application is that it can generate blow-down diagrams in .dxf format utilizing information entered into the database. KCI also developed an Intranet/Internet module to allow Verizon to incorporate GIS base mapping and distribute information utilizing the web. The module allows users to “drill down” through layers of data in the project area, obtaining successively greater detail with each level.
