KCI conducted a subsurface exploration and geotechnical evaluation for the Waterford Dam spillway failure and proposed rehabilitation. The embankment around the corrugated metal pipe spillway had collapsed, which also caused the collapse of a timber bridge and asphalt-paved trailed further downstream.
The purpose of the study was to determine general subsurface conditions at the Waterford Dam spillway and to evaluate those conditions with respect to geotechnical engineering considerations for the proposed spillway repair.
Based on the standard penetration test borings and laboratory testing and visual inspection results, KCI recommended that reinforced concrete pipe conduits be installed, surrounded by low permeability soil materials.
