Suburban development sometimes outpaces the County’s capacity to develop adequate recreational facilities within limited budgets and short time frames. Western Regional Park in Western Howard County is a major part of the solution. Howard County contracted with KCI to plan this 190-acre regional park to provide sports fields and a diversity of recreational venues while retaining the rural and aesthetic context of the property and surrounding landscape.
The location of the property provided Howard County with a unique opportunity to create a premier park that not only provides for the recreational needs of the community, but also preserves the rural landscape unique to the area. The site provides a unique opportunity for creating a visual context and linkage between the park and the surrounding community.
The project was completed in five phases including: preliminary field investigations; lake feasibility study and schematic park design; design development; construction documents; and bidding. KCI provided full-service engineering services in order to implement the Park’s Master Plan over these five phases.
