KCI Technologies, Inc. provided site planning, site/civil engineering, landscape architecture, surveying, and environmental planning for the construction of a new 82,000 SF, two-story prototype elementary school. The total site area encompassed approximately 20 acres, 10 acres of which are owned by the Baltimore County Board of Education. The remaining 10 acres are owned by Baltimore County Recreation and Parks and is used as a community recreational park.
KCI’s Environmental Planning Group performed a comprehensive review of the existing forested area and also performed a site assessment to determining the existence of wetlands. A forest stand delineation was completed for approximately 7.5 acres. The wetland review identified three distinct wetland areas.
KCI’s Site & Facilities Engineering staff developed several site alternates including numerous parking facility, bus loop, fire access, and recreational facility layouts. The new building and site incorporated the existing recreation and park use into the overall development plan. The selected alternate allowed an existing parking facility to be incorporated into the campus plan and reutilized as the school’s new parking facility. The stormwater management design included a pond and several bio-retention areas which doubled as outdoor educational teaching areas for the students.
