Cultural resource assessments are critical components in meeting Federal, State, and local environmental protection and historic preservation regulations. On many transportation and building projects, agencies turn to KCI’s archaeologists, historians, and other cultural resource specialists to investigate whether proposed construction would impact prehistoric or historic artifacts or historic properties.
KCI teams work closely with public- and private-sector clients to coordinate archaeological, architectural, and historic studies with environmental, engineering, and socioeconomic requirements, developing effective avoidance or mitigation strategies when required. Our professionals have completed projects involving transportation facilities, residential and industrial developments, mining facilities, utility alignments, wetland mitigations, as well as educational and religious facilities. When projects require public involvement, KCI serves as a liaison among stakeholders, facilitating an atmosphere of coordination and cooperation, while helping citizens understand and appreciate their national heritage.
KCI has produced extensive National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) compliance documentation, such as Categorical Exclusion Evaluations, Environmental Assessments, and Environmental Impact Statements, and coordinated successful cultural resource plans with State and Federal agencies and State Historic Preservation Officers in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Maine, New York, West Virginia, Virginia, Delaware, and Washington, DC.
KCI’s cultural resource professionals meet or exceed the Professional Qualification Standards (48 FR 22716) established by the Department of the Interior, and are familiar with State and Federal laws and regulations governing historic preservation:
