KCI and its subconsultants performed inspections of more than 170 bridges and culverts throughout Delaware. The work included underwater and low-clearance inspections. Bridge types included concrete, steel and timber multi-beam, concrete and timber slab and reinforced concrete arch. Culvert types included corrugated high density polyethylene, corrugated steel pipe, reinforced concrete pipe and precast concrete box. One pipe culvert had tide gates attached at the downstream end. Timber increment core samples were obtained for several structures. Most structures were located on the coastline with heavy tidal currents, heavy debris and zero visibility. Access to the sites sometimes required a dive or jon boat.
An inspection report was prepared for each structure. All work was in accordance with DelDOT’s “Bridge Inspection Manual.” Low-clearance reports utilized DelDOT’s Pontis bridge management software. The underwater inspection reports consisted of stand-alone comprehensive written reports with a summary of findings, scope and methods of inspection, bridge description, location map, identification and defect photos, detailed findings with NBI condition ratings and Pontis element ratings, CADD sketches of defects and soundings, conclusions, and recommended repairs/actions.
