The project involved the replacement of a 117-foot long structurally deficient bridge on SR 3004 (Friedensville Road/West Water Street) over Saucon Creek in Northampton County, Pennsylvania. This crossing carries traffic along the major east-west route in and out of Hellertown Borough. To minimize impacts to motorists, residents, businesses, school districts, emergency services and the nearby Lehigh University football field, KCI and the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation District 5-0 presented a plan to the city of Bethlehem, Hellertown Borough and Lower Saucon Township to detour the bridge during construction for a maximum 60-day duration.
Our team developed an Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) concept to achieve the fast-track construction schedule. The alternative traffic control method, half-width construction while maintaining one traffic lane, would have an anticipated duration of two construction seasons. KCI coordinated with the three local municipalities to receive their approval of the scheduled detour, navigated the difficult site constraints mitigated by design and construction teams, and used ABC techniques to complete the project with a minimally disruptive construction schedule.
