Carsins Run Stream Restoration Wins MDOT Environmental Excellence Award

May 31, 2022 | Awards

The Maryland Department of Transportation recently honored the Carsins Run Stream Restoration project with a 2022 Environmental Excellence award in the Environmental Quality category.

KCI, along with MDTA and project partners, delivered the Carsins Run Stream Restoration project ahead of schedule and below budget. The project provides stream mitigation credit and creates wetlands to help meet the mitigation requirements due to unavoidable impacts associated with the MDTA I-95 Section 200. The project restores portions of Carsins Run, the main stem and a tributary, using proven and innovative techniques to restore the environment and improve sustainability. The main stem restoration replaced a deteriorated concrete channel lining with more natural and sustainable stone structures to improve stability and habitat. The tributary restoration reduces erosion, reconnects the surrounding floodplain at more frequent flows, creates wetlands, enhances the riparian corridor with robust native planting, and provides habitat uplift. KCI provided assessment, baseline monitoring, hydrologic modeling, stream restoration design, permitting support, preparation of Phase II Mitigation Plan, on-site construction support, as-built review, and as-built/year 1 post construction monitoring.
