The Virginia Avenue Smart Corridor recently received awards and recognition from three different industry organizations. During their fall conference, the Georgia Planning Commission honored this corridor with a 2019 outstanding initiative award. In November, the project received the 2019 ITS Small Project of Significance honor from the Intelligent Transportation Society of Georgia. Additionally, the American Council of Engineering Companies of Georgia will honor the project as an engineering excellence award winner during their annual banquet in March.
This corridor project examined technology options for elements to improve safety, walkability, and mobility along the two-mile roadway between US 29/Main Street and South Central Avenue. Led by Aerotropolis Atlanta CIDs and Modern Mobility Partners, KCI was responsible for leading the public involvement process, assisting with the needs assessment, and providing support with project deliverables. After examining practices implemented across the country and abroad, a list of more than 30 emerging technology strategies were developed and evaluated. These strategies were then refined and a set of site-specific and corridor-wide technology recommendations were presented, as well as a phasing and implementation plan. Over the next few years, selected projects will transform the corridor into a smart and highly integrated, multi-modal roadway.
