Bayne Smith is a Senior Vice President and Transportation South Discipline Manager. He joined the firm in 2016 as a Vice President and Regional Transportation Practice Leader in the southeast. He has more than 25 years of experience in traffic and transportation engineering in both the public and private sectors. Bayne has served as the principal-in-charge or project manager on a variety of transportation projects including intelligent transportation systems (ITS) planning, design, operations, and maintenance; traffic signal design; traffic engineering studies; and local government public works operations. In the public sector, he spent 15 years with the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) where he served as GDOT’s Assistant State Traffic Operations Engineer, ITS Program Manager, District 1 Engineer, and Director of Field Operations.
Bayne earned his bachelor’s degrees in civil engineering and math/physics from the Georgia Institute of Technology and the University of Georgia, respectively. He is a registered professional engineer and is a Professional Traffic Operations Engineer. Throughout his career, Bayne has been active in a number of technical societies including serving as past president for the Georgia Section of the Institute of Transportation Engineers, a member of the board of directors for the Intelligent Transportation Society of Georgia and member of the Transportation Research Board. In 2014, he was honored with the Institute of Transportation Engineers’ Carl Bevins Outstanding Engineer award. Smith currently serves on the board of directors of the Athens-Ben Epps Airport Authority and American Council of Engineering Companies of Georgia, and recently joined the advisory board for the University of Georgia College of Engineering.
