KCI provided design-build services for a new access road, running parallel to I-16, that would lead to a Hyundai electric vehicle (EV) assembly plant as part of a $1.8 billion incentive package.
Extensive coordination and innovative design were required to allow plant production in 2025. Using OpenRoads software, KCI modeled the footprint, drainage systems, and connections to the Hyundai plant, minimizing impacts to wetlands and infrastructure.
Challenges included extremely flat terrain and a set pad elevation already under construction, requiring a pavement elevation four feet above the existing grade to be designed for proper drainage and smooth transitions to the plant. The alignment was required to have minimal horizontal curvature while accommodating the stringent design requirements of Hyundai. Despite budget and logistical constraints, KCI delivered comprehensive costing and right-of-way plans in seven months, earning high praise from the client and supporting significant economic growth in the area.
