The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) District 3-0 had developed a preliminary design for a culvert rehabilitation project using their in-house team.

However, to meet the scheduled let date, an expedited design timeline became essential. The project aimed to extend the lifespan of the 100-foot-long, nearly century-old culvert by 50 years through comprehensive concrete repairs within the structure. Navigating the accelerated timeline, our team worked to resolve challenges of concrete degradation, erosion, and roadway stability. KCI utilized innovative solutions such as fiber-reinforced polymer ceiling repairs and a temporary access road later converted into a permanent swale to mitigate risks and optimize project efficiency.

By using a center turn lane for traffic control, our team mitigated disruptions, prevented a significant detour, and minimized environmental impacts. Additionally, the project featured sustainable practices like stabilizing slopes and minimizing wetland disturbances. Throughout the timeline, detailed coordination and communication between KCI and PennDOT ensured adherence to milestones and budgetary constraints. The success of this project reinforced the culvert’s resilience for the next half-century.
