KCI worked closely with the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PTC) to design and deploy a mobile application for traffic engineering and operations management that created efficiencies for the response staff.
The Situational Traffic Awareness and Response (STAR) application is a native mobile app for Apple iOS and Google Android devices that was developed by the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission. Traffic incidents and roadway issues are fed in near real time to the mobile application and enriched with key situational awareness data such as traffic speed, weather information at the site, length of traffic backlog, and work zone details.
The app enables users to configure settings to receive push notifications for incident types and locations that are most relevant to them. By providing a common operating picture, incident management personnel have a comprehensive and up-to-date understanding of each roadway incident. This enhances the decision-making process and allows the PTC to maintain a better, safer roadway.
This project was delivered as services for hire, and ownership and related intellectual property is that of the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission.
