Recognizing increasing congestion issues along Harry Wurzbach Road and Austin Highway, the City of San Antonio contracted KCI to provide transportation and traffic services as they sought to construct a new single-point urban interchange (SPUI), the first to exist in the area.

This intersection design can streamline complex traffic patterns in limited space by converging all traffic movements from a typical diamond configuration of a separated grade interchange to be controlled by a single traffic signal. The project involved drainage improvements, utility relocations, signal upgrades, enhanced lighting, and landscaping, all seeking to cater to multimodal accessibility.

Our team was responsible for conducting traffic studies, drainage analysis, LiDAR scans, surveying, construction design, public meetings, utility coordination, landscape design, and environmental permitting. Additionally, architectural enhancements were installed to contribute to the aesthetic of the local area, while newly implemented safety features encourage a heightened sense of awareness for all modes of transportation. Closing out a seven-year-long initiative, the new SPUI was constructed on time and within budget and the project’s success has set a precedent for further innovative implementations in the area.
