KCI led the rehabilitation and reconstruction design for 1,250 feet of bulkhead and waterfront platform to facilitate the redevelopment of the former Domino Sugar Refinery, a waterfront site in Brooklyn.

As the lead designer, our scope of work encompassed the bulkhead, relieving platform, quay wall, foundation systems, concrete footings, piles, retaining walls, and piers for the five-acre waterfront park. In addition, our team contributed resiliency studies, use of sustainable materials such as Recycled Plastic Lumber (RPL), and careful construction sequencing.

KCI conducted condition assessments, including a hydrographic survey and underwater inspection, to determine the condition of the existing infrastructure before crafting a tailored plan for repair. After these investigations revealed which sections of the bulkhead required complete reconstruction versus general repair, our team incorporated various innovative solutions into the design. Due to a difficult-to-remove timber cribbing structure at the inshore, we devised a creative solution to construct a new precast concrete block wall on top of the existing crib structure where the timber was below the mudline. This innovative design provided a substantial decrease in construction costs for the project owner.

KCI also spearheaded the intricate permit process, interfacing with city, state, and federal authorities and successfully obtaining the necessary NYC DSBS Waterfront Permits. Additionally, our hydrographic survey of the area surrounding the existing platform established mudline elevations that proved instrumental throughout the permitting process and the subsequent platform reconstruction.
