KCI partnered with the Howard County Economic Authority to evaluate Phase 1 of the Howard County Gateway Connector, a multimodal trail envisioned to connect communities across Columbia, Maryland, and the surrounding region.
The Gateway Connector is a long-term initiative focused on building an integrated transportation network that supports economic development, improves mobility and access, and enhances quality of life by prioritizing walking, bicycling, transit, and emerging transportation technologies. Working closely with HCEA, KCI conducted a feasibility study and developed a conceptual vision for the initial phase along an unused rail corridor, including base mapping, field assessments, engineering advisory services, high-level cost estimates, and 3D visualizations.
The concept plan features accessible access points, safe roadway crossings, autonomous shuttle integration, and themed zones designed to activate the corridor and create vibrant community spaces. Proposed amenities include trailheads, public art, pocket parks, plazas, environmental features, and integrated safety and lighting systems. By transforming an underutilized rail corridor into a connected multimodal asset, the Gateway Connector will serve to expand access to jobs, services, recreation, and transit while promoting active transportation, equity, and long-term community connectivity.
