When I started at KCI, I came with a writing degree and curiosity.
KCI’s tuition assistance program made it possible for me to earn my MBA while working, and I quickly learned that asking questions was the fastest way to grow. That spirit of inquiry and continuous learning has been a constant in my career and has led me to explore opportunities to expand my exposure to the industry.
With this mindset, I searched for like-minded people that I could learn from and discovered the Society for Marketing Professional Services (SMPS). SMPS is the professional organization for marketers in the AEC industry, much like ACEC or ASHE. For me, it’s been a source of best practices, new ideas, and camaraderie – an environment where people understand the unique challenges of our field and are always willing to share hard-earned wisdom. Whether I was up against tight deadlines or creative resistance, SMPS offered a forum to explore new approaches and learn how to make them work. Throughout my career, I’ve taken on a variety of roles, but no matter where I was, SMPS remained a constant, providing insight, opportunity, and a network of support.
My leadership journey within SMPS has been equally transformative. I’ve volunteered for committees, managed the Communications team, and served as Treasurer. These experiences allowed me to practice advanced skills in a supportive, lower-stakes environment, directly translating to higher performance in my day-to-day work at KCI. I am currently honored to serve as President-Elect, guiding the chapter’s vision and supporting the professional growth of our members.
For anyone considering professional organization involvement, I can’t recommend it enough. SMPS, like ACEC and other industry groups, is focused on continuous learning and development. It’s a place to build connections, refine your skills, and find the support you need to thrive in a constantly evolving industry. KCI has always encouraged my professional development, supporting my SMPS involvement and recognizing the value it brings to both the firm and my own growth. The lessons I’ve learned have shaped my approach to strategy and operations, preparing me for greater challenges and opportunities ahead.
